Last night our service included a time of intercession for a number of our our members who are currently seriously ill. A key part of the sermon had been on Romans 12:15 (Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.) and it was anticipated that any of these members could have been at the service.
"I'm not quite sure what songs we should follow this with," said the minister,"but I can trust you to choose the right thing John."

What would you do?  Find something very relevant to the matter of prayer for the sick or move into less specific content?

Hi John:

Oh, I think it would be most appropriate to include such stalwart hymns like "It is Well With My Soul" or "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" or other such similar hymns that have stood the test of time. Such selections serve to pull together the congregation in mutual support of friends and loved ones who are ill or perhaps at death's door. I think such hymns give further strength to Jesus' promise that we will have a place prepared for us. In fact, I read that portion of Scripture (John 14: 1-4) at my father's funeral in April of this year that gave great comfort to the family.

Blessings,

What I chose was ...
"Make me a channel of your peace", which carried many of Paul's sentiments in that passage. (About fellowship and the journey to the other side, which led into the open intercessions for those ill and for the peace of their families.)
The Taize chant "O Lord hear my prayer" as a congregational amen to the prayers prayed.
And Matt Redman's "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. (You never let go)" to close the service within the theme but on an emotional upbeat.

Sadly, we heard today that one of the people we had prayed for died this morning but we rejoice that she will now be at peace and with her saviour.
