Something that came to me when I was preparing for last Sunday ...
Do you go to church to meet your brothers and sisters in Christ ?
Do you go to church to meet God and open your heart to Him?
Do you go to church to sing hymns / sons?
Do you go to church to hear the word?

I'm sure the answer is probably "all of the above" but what is it really gets you out of bed on a Sunday morning?  Smiley

My primary reasons are:

-To meet God and open my heart to Him
-To hear the word and learn how to better apply it to daily life

Secondarily (but a close second :-):
-to sing hymns
-to meet brothers and sisters

I think they are all connected and that being together in community involves each one. The verse that comes to mind is Acts 2:42:

They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

each of the four things mentioned in the post above are referred to in this verse...

I think the primary reason why I go to church is to be able to worship God in the company of other believers. I think both fellowship and meeting God are the most important aspects of the Sunday service that make me feel I want to go to church.

There are other aspects such as the teaching, breaking bread, sharing the gospel with not-yet-believers that that I would say are equal priority and I would include all of them as what church is for, but it is the prospect of meeting with God that actually motivates me to get out of bed.

I go to church for all of the reasons mentioned above. I believe we can worship and commune with God anywhere and anytime -- the problem is we do not tend to take the time. Attending church is one more opportunity to spend time completely devoted to God. It also is a time to join with others who are likeminded in their desire to know and worship God. Church is an opportunity for fellowship and to hear an inspiring and thought-provoking message that we will, hopefully, carry with us throughout the rest of the week. It is an opportunity to set aside the worries and the cares; a time to remove ourselves from the routines and the hum-drum of life long enough to be renewed and re-charged and refreshed.

Hi Soulshine!  Thanks for posting. It is interesting to hear that while there is a level of consistency about our desire to worship God, the reasons for gathering on Sunday are all slightly varied.

Look forward to your contributions to this forum.
